SEATING AUDITIONS: Seating is important for the overall sound and leadership in the orchestra, and seating decisions are based on many factors. Musical considerations are listed below. Leadership qualities are also important to consider. One example of leadership is taking responsibility for (and passing back) bowings and fingerings. Leaders maintain focus in rehearsal, convey a positive attitude and demonstrate dedication to the orchestra. Determining seating is one of the most difficult aspects of the conductor's job. I wish that everyone who works hard could sit first chair! I spend hours after the auditions carefully considering seating. Please remember that our orchestra is one of the best, and that all of you are part of our success.
There will be ONE audition at the beginning of the year. The director reserves the right to alter seating at her discretion for artistic, musical or disciplinary reasons. The following will be required of each student:
Prepared piece (assigned) = 50 points.
Scales (TBA) = 25 points.
Sight-reading = 25 points.
The above will be judged on the following: intonation, rhythm/accuracy, tone, bowing/articulation and musicianship.
Anyone wishing to be considered for section leader should have an extra piece of his/her choice ready to perform at the seating audition. ONLY do this if you want to be considered for a section leader position.
Only the first two players of each section will be seated. All others will sit in alphabetical order and rotate after each performance. All students must play a seating audition.
